New alcohol consumption guidelines have just been released and it coincides with the increased consumption of alcohol during the COVID period. One of the biggest purchases during COVID was groceries and alcohol and this social groups have shown concern that people confined at home would abuse alcohol leading to an increase in alcohol related social issues.
The new guidelines were researched and developed by The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) with the intention of helping to reduce the health risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption. The new guidelines replace the current guidelines that have been in place since 2009.
The guidelines have indicated the following:
– No more than four standard drinks on a given day
– No more than ten standard drinks over the course of a week.
Adults need to stick to these guidelines to ensure they maintain their health.
Alcohol consumption behaviour has changed during the pandemic with people no longer consuming alcohol in pubs, instead drinking at home. Not only are they drinking at home but they are drinking more than before as a form of stress relief. The National Health and Medical Research Council are hoping these new guidelines stick to the back of the mind of consumers when they are sitting down to have a drink.
